If you do not already have an application that can read (and print) the universal Portable Document Format (pdf) files you can get a free Reader from sites such as those listed below. You will probably need a reader that can handle files generated by version 3 of Acrobat. Download free applications to make or read Adobe PDF files on RISC OS (Acorn) computers from one of the sites listed below. Free PDF creators for RISC OSGhostScriptGhostScript was developed as a free alternative to Acrobat for Unix and Linux computers. It has been ported to other platforms including Windows and RISC OS (Acorn). It is a very powerful application which can do many clever things. The RISC OS (Acorn) version is no exception. The RISC OS (Acorn) version, and some support applications, can be found by clicking here.GhostScript’s little helpersGhostScript itself is usually run from the command line. RISC OS users like me are spoilt by having clever, fellow users who have written and made freely available front ends that let us use GhostScript in the background for many of its powerful products. Here are a few of the URLs that will help to get the RISC OS user started. The essential GhostScript files can be fetched from the link below. (Version 7.03 has just been released in January 2002). There are also some valuable helpers here like PSUtilsTo make creation of PDF files very simple get a copy of Tims Nicholson’s Ps2pdf. Once GhostScript has been ‘seen’ simply drop a PostScript file onto PS2PDF on the iconbar and the job is soon done. The easy way to get GhostScript to display PostScript pages and save them as Sprites is to use Martin Würthner’s front-end called GVIEW. At the time of writing it is at version 1.10 and now seems to display multiple page documents quite well. TaborcaA free, preliminary version of the application Taborca has been supplied by RISCOS Ltd on a public page. There are no prizes for guessing which application it mirrors! This version will only generate the first three pages of a document, but does that very well. It is very suitable for short documents. The aspect of Taborca that pleases me most is that is that it allows one to print a PDF file directly from the document without the need to create an intermediate PostScript file. It works rather like PDFWriter in the Acrobat suite. Now that RiScript is being so well developed we shall have to wait and see if further versions of Taborca appear. Even in this form it is very useful. Does Taborca only work with RISC OS 4? RiScriptRiScript from Cerilica is not free, but is excellent value as a commercial application which reads and creates PostScript (PoScript) and Portable Document Format (pdf) files. The main reason a RISC OS user may want to own it is its ability to take PoScript or PDF files and output them as PDF, PoScript or Drawfile format. This makes high quality PDF publishing for web or paper very easy for RISC OS users. Visit Cerilica to find out more about RiScript. Links that may assist with PDF creation
